Region of Usage

Region of expression's usage

Regional label. This generalization is based on all the available evidence, but especially, when possible, on evidence from the DARE Questionnaire. The term "regional" in DARE refers to words and phrases whose forms or meanings are not used throughout the United States but only in a part or parts of the country; the term is also broadly used to include those words used more frequently by a particular social group (e.g., older speakers, Black speakers, women, rural people) than would be expected based on demographics; and it includes words that are "folk" in origin--that is, those that are learned from family and friends rather than teachers and books. For a full discussion of DARE's criteria for inclusion and exclusion, see Volume I, pp. xvi-xviii.
