1943 Sun (Baltimore MD) 24 Aug 10/7, Bombazine . . was also the chief fabric . . of umbrellas. Hence those useful implements were occasionally called “bombazines.” The word was almost always used humorously, probably because it has such a formidable sound. 1970 DARE (Qu.
